The CW has begun casting for its attempt at a Wonder Woman television series — even though it hasn’t officially greenlit a pilot yet.
Deadline reports that a casting call has gone out for the series lead of Diana — called “Iris” in the casting documents in a feeble attempt to avoid attention. The potential series is working under the title Amazon, with a pilot written by Allan Heinberg (Grey’s Anatomy, The O.C.).
It’s a somewhat unusual move to begin casting before a network commits to produce a pilot episode, though not unheard of where a show fundamentally depends upon its lead. Assuming the network and producers can find someone they are happy with, it does bode well for at least the production of a pilot.
“Iris comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield,” according to the breakdown. “Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted and just as often horrified by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted.”
Diana is described as blunt and keenly insightful, a true romantic with a noble heart and a willingness to fight and die for the people she loves.
The CW’s take on the venerable hero — played by Linda Carter in the classic 1970s series — sounds like it will be as down-to-earth and reality-based as current hit Arrow. Instead of a magic lasso that forces bad guys to tell the truth, Diana is just really intuitive and able to tell when she is being lied to. So think less “super powers” and more ass-kicking and relationship issues.
It’s only been a couple of years since NBC took a shot at a Wonder Woman series — that one produced by the oddly-paired veteran legal drama producer David E. Kelly (Boston Legal, Harry’s Law). That one starred Friday Night Lights‘ Adrianne Palicki, but suffered a good dose of press and fan ridicule (particularly over photos of the superhero’s costume). It never made it past the pilot.
If The CW’s version of the DC hero works, it would make a great companion show for its new comic book hit Arrow. The show based on the Green Arrow comics is doing great numbers in its freshman season on Wednesday nights.
