Syfy headed back to space with Clandestine

If present-day, Earth-based genre series like Alphas, Warehouse 13, Eureka, and Haven aren’t your cup of tea, Syfy Channel hasn’t forgotten you. The network has several new series in development, including a new show just announced that will take the cable network back into outer space.

Clandestine is described as “a swash-buckling space drama/adventure and revolves around mercenaries who masquerade as part of an Intergalactic fleet,” according to Deadline. The show would be produced by Universal Cable Productions, and is currently being written by Todd Stashwick (Heroes, Justified) and comic book artist Dennis Calero.

John Shiban (Hell On Wheels) is supervising the script and is attached as executive producer, according to the report.  Stashwick and Calero will co-executive produce.

The network has been lacking in the more fantastical, hard science fiction since cancelling Caprica and Stargate Universe in 2010, and Sanctuary in 2012.

Syfy is currently filming the first season of Defiance, which is expected to premiere next spring. That series is more hard sci-fi — it includes alien species and an apocalyptic setting — but it isn’t space-based.

Time-travel series Rewind has gotten a green light to film a pilot episode (story). In the series a top-secret organization uses advanced technology to send operatives into the past to try and prevent a terrorist attack.

Also on the development slate is High Moon, set in “a future where the countries of Earth have established colonies to mine the Moon’s resources,” according to a Syfy press release. “When a new life form is discovered, chaos erupts as various factions race to uncover and exploit its powerful secrets.” The series is being developed by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) and Robert Halmi (Farscape, Flash Gordon).

And M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) and Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) are teaming up to produce Proof, in which “the son of a billionaire tech genius offers a large reward for anyone who can find proof of life after death.”

Not every series that enters the development pipeline will shoot a pilot episode, let alone make it to air.  Stick with SciFi Stream for future updates on these shows.

Alphas and Warehouse 13 are currently airing on Monday nights. Haven returns for its third season September 21.
