A&E Adapting French Drama The Returned

The dead are coming back to life.

The A&E Network may be getting into the supernatural fantasy genre. The U.S. cable channel has acquired the rights for an American remake of The Returned (Les Revenants), a French series inspired by the 2004 feature film from Robin Campillo.

Created by Fabrice Gobert, The Returned tells the story of a small town where deceased loved ones mysteriously show up alive and well — and with no show of any passage of time, or knowledge that they had been dead. As the town’s people try and deal with the situation, strange phenomena and a series of gruesome murders occur.

Les Revenants premiered last fall on Canal Plus in France, and also aired on Channel 4 in the U.K. with English subtitles under the title Rebound. Season Two is on its way, while the 8-episode first season of the original will air in the U.S. on Sundance Channel.

The A&E adaptation does not have a writer attached yet, though Deadline reports that the network is talking with LOST executive producer Carlton Cuse.

The show’s premise bears a remarkable similarity to Resurrection, a new ABC series set to debut at mid-season. To make things more confusing that show is based on the Jason Mott novel also titled The Returned, which was just published in August.
