Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode Synopsis: ‘The Asset’

Will the third episode introduce a major comic book villain?

We’re just two days away from what is surely the most talked-about new series premiere of 2013: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the TV spin-off of the 2012 blockbuster movie The Avengers. Today ABC released its official synopsis for the third episode, titled “The Asset.”

AGENT COULSON AND HIS S.H.I.E.L.D. TEAM RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK TO RESCUE A KIDNAPPED SCIENTIST, ON ABC’S “MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.”

When the brilliant scientist Dr. Franklin Hall is kidnapped, Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. agents must race against the clock to locate him. Skye is their only way in — pushing the team to their limits when the entire plan turns upside-down.

With the introduction of Dr. Franklin Hall, it looks like the show is set to strike early when it comes to introducing characters from the broad pantheon of the Marvel Comics universe.  Hall is the alter ego of Graviton, one of the Avengers’ earliest foes, who has the power to control gravity fields with his mind.

In the comics, Dr. Hall was working on a practical teleportation device at a private physics laboratory when an accident … well, you know the rest.

Don’t expect to necessarily see much of Graviton in this episode, though: the show may be telling an origins story for the character, or perhaps just laying the groundwork for the future.

“The Asset” was written by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen and directed by Milan Cheylov.  Guest stars include Ian Hart as Dr. Franklin Hall, David Conrad as Ian Quinn, Josh Cowdery as Agent Tyler, Bodie Newcomb as Agent Mack, Scott Subiono as Todd Chesterfield, Vachik Mangassarian as Qasim Zaghlul, Assaf Cohen as translator, and Brandon Molale as Quinn’s main guard.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres this Tuesday at 8/7c on ABC! “The Asset” will air on October 8.
