NBC Adapting Supernatural Comic Book Constantine
It’s a three-fer for DC Comics’ TV development season.
Just when you think we’ve maxed out on the number of science fiction and fantasy shows in development for next season, the sun rises and yet another is announced.
Today it’s NBC’s turn to jump on the comic book bandwagon. The network has bought an adaptation of DC Comics’ Constantine, from The Mentalist executive producer Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer (FlashForward, Da Vinci’s Demons).
Goyer’s big-screen DC writing credits include Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Man of Steel, as well as the upcoming Batman vs. Superman.
The long-running comic book follows John Constantine, “an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending us against dark forces from beyond,” says Deadline.
The character was created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and Jamie Delano and first appeared in print in 1985. He was played by Keanu Reeves in a 2005 movie adaptation.
The series development deal carries a penalty for NBC, which means that the network will have to pay out if it doesn’t order the production of a pilot.
Constantine makes the third series in development this season for DC Comics and Warner Bros. Television — all on broadcast television. The CW is working on a planted pilot for a Flash TV series (story), and FOX has already committed to Gotham — following the early years of Detective James Gordon, from the Batman franchise (story).
