12 Monkeys Gets 12 Episodes At Syfy

The new series will debut early next year

Offering further proof of the network’s commitment to traditional science fiction drama, Syfy today announced that it has picked up 12 Monkeys to series.

The show is based on the 1995 Terry Gilliam film of the same name, about a man from a post-apocalyptic future who travels back in time to the present day on a mission to locate and stop the source of a deadly plague that will one day decimate the human race.

Aaron Stanford (Nikita, and Pryo in X-Men 2 and 3) stars as James Cole. Amanda Schull (Suits), Noah Bean (Nikita), and Kirk Acevedo (Fringe‘s Charlie Francis) also star.

Syfy ordered 12 episodes for a January 2015 premiere, making the series a likely companion for Season Two of Helix.

12 Monkeys is a captivating time travel adventure and high stakes race against the clock,” Syfy president Dave Howe said.

The series is written and co-executive produced by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (Nikita). Natalie Chaidez (V) will be executive producer and showrunner.

The pick-up for 12 Monkeys comes soon after the series green light for Dominion — also based on a feature film (the 2010 angel war pic Legion).

Another recent pilot, Bryan Fuller’s High Moon, will not go to series.
