Star Trek: Prodigy Return Date Has Been Revealed
Dal and the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar return for a second season of adventures this summer at its new streaming home.
Star Trek’s animated adventure show Star Trek: Prodigy is finally headed back to our screens, a year and a half after Season 1 finished.
The Paramount+ and Nickelodeon show was greenlit for a second season, but late into production the streaming service yanked the cord on the animated series in a cost-cutting measure. That left fans in the lurch, with a full season of the show ready to go … but without a broadcast home. Enter Netflix, which announced it had picked up both seasons for 2024.
Now we finally know Prodigy’s premiere date: July 1. While Netflix hasn’t revealed whether it will drop the entire season at once, the “Season 2 Coming July 1” notice is now appearing on the “New & Hot” tab of the mobile app (first spotted by TrekCore.com):
Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, Star Trek: Prodigy follows a ragtag group of young people who find an advanced prototype starship from the Federation hidden in the Delta Quadrant. Along with the ship’s holographic version of Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) Dal, Gwyn, Rok-Tahk, Jankom Pog (a Tellarite), Zero (a Medusan), and Murf form a crew and set out to reunite the ship with Starfleet … until they discover that their greatest foe has a deadly plan for the U.S.S. Protostar.
Star Trek: Voyager‘s Kate Mulgrew co-stars on the show, playing both Admiral Janeway and a holographic version of her younger self on board the Protostar. Robert Beltran (Chakotay) also made an appearance in the first season. In Season 2, look for their Voyager co-star Robert Picardo (the Doctor) in a recurring role — revealed in a first-look teaser posted at StarTrek.com. (But beware of spoilers for Season 1 if you haven’t seen it yet!)
After rescuing the show from cancellation Netflix said it would stream Prodigy in 2024, but until now has run silent on when the show would appear. (Meanwhile international streaming services have already premiered the new season.)
Prodigy is not currently in production on future episodes, though if it is a hit for Netflix it’s certainly possible they could order a third season.
Season 1 of Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on Netflix right now, so get your binge going before the new season drops!
