Orphan Black Begins Production On Season Two

BBC America’s breakout hit returns in 2014.

The second season of Orphan Black has its first day in front of cameras today in Toronto. A co-production of BBC America and SPACE, 2013’s breakout hit was created by John Fawcett and Graeme Manson. (Watch an interview with them below.)

Season Two of the science fiction conspiracy thriller will start on BBC America and Canada’s SPACE in April 2014. It will be comprised of another 10 new episodes.

Fawcett and Manson hinted at what’s to come in the new season when they talked with reporters at Comic-Con in July.

“We know where we’re going with our mystery in a broad and general sense,” the producers said (via Sci-Fi Talk). “We love our cliffhangers. We love our cliffhangers at the end of episodes and we love them at the end of acts. We knew a lot of the elements to the climax of the season. We really liked putting Sarah back where we met her: She’s on the run. She hasn’t got her daughter and she has a pocket full of change. Finding Sarah there is where we pick up Season Two.

“A big part of the focus for our main character of Sarah is getting her daughter back — figuring out who took her, where they went, and getting her back. And Sarah is going to kick ass at the beginning of Season Two, that’s for sure.”

Orphan Black (Rachel)
The first season finale introduced a seventh “orphan,” Rachel Duncan (Tatiana Maslany).

The season finale also introduced a new clone, Rachel, who appears to have a lot of power and knowledge of what’s going on in the secret “neo-lution” cloning program.

“So we have a new clone to explore in Rachel — or a new ‘orphan,’ as we don’t use the ‘c’ word,” Fawcett and Manson said. “We’re really interested in that dynamic. In a lot of ways Sarah has started a war with Rachel.”

Series star Tatiana Maslany won a Television Critics Association award for her multi-character portrayal. In the first season she played seven different characters: the streetwise Sarah Manning, police detective Beth Childs (who kills herself in the first episode), German Katja Obinger, soccer mom Alison Hendrix, brilliant genetics student Cosima Niehaus, the violent Helena, and mysterious power-player Rachel Duncan.

The show co-stars Jordan Gavaris as Sarah’s foster brother, Felix; Dylan Bruce as Beth’s boyfriend, Paul; and Kevin Hanchard as Beth’s partner, Detective Bell.

If you’re not already in the “Clone Club,” it’s time to catch up! Season One is currently repeating on BBC America (Saturdays, 10/9c), and is out now on DVD and Blu-ray. In the U.K., Season One is also currently airing on BBC Three (Fridays, 9 p.m.).
