In the sprawling western theme park of Westworld, programmers observe disturbing behaviors among the automaton "hosts" following a code update. In the town of Sweetwater a rancher's daughter, Dolores, is reunited with a gunslinger -- only to have her story go terribly wrong when the Man in Black arrives.
The Man in Black conscripts a condemned man to help him reach the unspoken secrets of Westworld, while the park's engineers attempt to recondition Maeve, a madam in Sweetwater's brothel who may be experiencing recall of past events. A first-time guest named Billy arrives in town uncertain what to make of his options, and cocky programmer Lee Sizemore pitches his new narrative.
The programmer Elsie enters the park in search of a stray host that has gone off its story, while William drags Logan along on a quest for adventure. Teddy gets a newly expanded backstory that sends him in pursuit of a murderous villain. As Dolores grapples with the reality of her vacant destiny, Bernard considers whether he should put an end to his side project.
The Man in Black meets a woman with a snake tattoo, who he thinks may hold answers. Logan and William take on a team of outlaws but have a difference of opinion. Maeve's inexplicable memories of the men in hazmat suits causes her to grow suspicious of her world. Meanwhile, Dr. Ford makes certain that Ms. Cullen knows who is in charge.
Dolores, William, and Logan arrive in the outlaw town of Pariah and agree to help its leader steal a shipment of nitro. The Man in Black continues his search with Teddy, while underground the Livestock Management worker Felix tries to bring a bird back to life.
Maeve charms her way into a tour of the facility where the world as she knows it is built and programmed, while Teddy and the Man in Black clash with a military garrison. As Bernard makes a personal discovery about Ford's activities in the park, Elsie's pursuit of the one responsible for corporate espionage yields surprising results.
Charlotte and Theresa confront the Behavior team with latent programming that poses a risk to the park's guests, putting Bernard into a precarious situation. Determined to be free once and for all, Maeve gives Lutz and Sylvester an ultimatum. As their train passes through hostile territory William debates his future with Dolores, but the group soon faces a devastating ambush.
Maeve's attempts to acquire admin control within the park requires her to trust her new friends on the outside, and Dolores has trouble separating her dreams from reality. Ford helps Bernard come to terms with recent events, and the Man in Black offers up a truth to Teddy.

As the Delos board of directors moves against Ford, Maeve sets her escape plan into motion. William goes to great lengths to find Dolores, whose path is destined to end with the Man in Black -- still desperate to find the center of the maze, but unaware of what it truly represents.
