Watch Captain Sam Vimes is confronted by a fateful decision from his younger days when a figure from his past returns to the city of Ankh-Morpork.

After Carcer attacks the city with a magical creature, Vimes and the Watch go to a magical institution in search of answers ... and a missing library book.

To pull off a heist Captain Vimes leads the Watch in an undercover operation posing as a rock band, while Sybil infiltrates the Assassin's Guild – dragging up haunting memories of her youth.
