Syfy Drops Time-Travel Show Rewind

The network has passed on the new TV series … and already aired the pilot.

Syfy Channel won’t send its time-travel pilot Rewind to series, the network officially confirmed today via Twitter.

It’s no surprise, seeing as the pilot shot in the spring of 2012 and the network has been conspicuously silent on the project since its completion. What is surprising is that Syfy has already burned off the pilot as a 2-hour movie. It aired Monday, August 26, with little fanfare and next to no advertising. (I, for one, was looking forward to seeing the show and had no idea it was going to be on.)

Rewind stars Shane McRae as an ex-Special Forces operative who joins a secret government division that uses experimental time travel technology to attempt to undo major world catastrophes — an idea not far off from Seven Days, which ran for three seasons on UPN (1998-2001).

The pilot burn-off is becoming common practice for Syfy, which has done the same with the pilot for Three Inches and Battlestar Galactica‘s spin-off Blood & Chrome.

In fact, Syfy doesn’t have all that great a track record with the pilot process itself. Most of the cable channel’s successful original scripted series started with a script and a full season order, including the forthcoming Helix, Defiance, and all three Stargate series.

Two other scripted series are currently at the pilot production stage for Syfy: Dominion, based on the angel warrior movie Legion; and High Moon, based on the 1969 John Christopher novel The Lotus Caves.

  • It seems syfy needs to re-evaluate its management structure. With decisions like this, and “Blood and Chrome” i think its safe to say they have a mole at the syfy network trying to drive them under(NOT that is would take much effort.) Poor business decisions result in a loss of revenue-Plain and simple. Constantly letting down a devoted fan-base does not equate to a long and prosperous future. Lets all hope and pray there is somebody within the syfy team that has an inkling of common sense, and the balls to do something/anything to thwart these travesties. Perhaps a crowd sourced scifi network would offer the competition needed to restore quality sci-fi programming to the geeks of the world such as myself. I dunno…. =/

I saw this show via charter ondemand. I thought it was a show that could’ve gone on to do something great. The characters were put together very well on my opinion. Syfy if you read this please put REWIND back on. I mean its bad enough you are cancelling warehouse 13 so after that show goes off air you should put REWIND in its place and advertise the show more and the true syfy fans will be there. PS I will not be watching fangasm that is a show that needs to go away.

DVRd it, and couldn’t wait to see the next episode after the way they ended it. Fail on the cancellation. Oh, and it will always be SciFi for me. Trying to be cool, hip and up to date on the newest thing should not promote bad spelling in US. LOL, anyway, I would have probably watched ‘Rewind’.

I saw Rewind and really enjoyed it and have wondered why no advertising and now I know. I sometimes wonder about what the people are like that make the decisions to cancel a show. Especially the ones who cancel a series and leave you hanging. Like Alcatraz and others that I have enjoyed and never came back. Yet we get a ton of reality shows (not any reality I have ever experienced or would want to) and some really stupid sitcoms. I want a show that is imaginative and entertaining with adventure and intrigue and even some history. There are hundreds of thousands of books that are really, really good but they keep making the same movies over and over. How many times can you do Spiderman, Superman, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. and even though I loved the Dark Knight, they are doing another one. Maybe Hollywood doesn’t read books but apparently they do read comic books. I hope someone else does pick Rewind up. Would love to see a series or at the very least a finish to the one the did air.

Finally saw Rewind from DVR, looked on line only to see it is already gone. Sad news, I was looking forward to more.

Saw the pilot and loved it which is which why I’m not surprised it was not picked up. I like intelligent shows. Great Pilot, great script, great acting, great ideas about the consequences of time travel. One big plot hole though:
    Spoiler Alert!!!

Did anyone else notice they realized they were on the wrong road when they heard the train whistle. But when they finally track down their target he is living right next to train tracks!

  • Really liked it, wrote if off months ago when I learned they were not gonna go through with this series. Then suddenly the pilot airs, immediately I had hope…perhaps a series after all. But of course my hopes were bashed by syfy, same with the new Blake’s 7 project which seems to have no future anymore and what about “Clandestine”, the so-called Firefly meets Farscape series? Pilot was ordered but since then not a peep. I NEED a space oriented TV series!

Can’t believe SciFi didn’t pick this up, not sure who is running these decisions but awful, absolutely awful decision to cancel this.

Why is SYFY still considering themselves Science Fiction channel when they cancel good ideas like Rewind as a series when half the shows are about ghost or reality series and horror which I don’t consider Science Fiction unless it has something in it with a Science plot like Warehouse 13 or Haven. Any way a long time ago a lady asked “Where’s The Beef”
I ask “Where’s the Science Fiction” SYFY!!!

  • Was sooo disappointed to see this show go. I was excited, it seemed a bit Fringe like, and was really looking fwd to the next episode. Why do they cancel all the good shows, and keep all the crap!

My husband and I loved the show. We hoped to see more of the series. Been waiting and checking on demand just in case we missed. I was searching the SYFY sight to see when it may be coming on, hope SYFY figures it out. REWIND is a very good Something different and new.

  • In the last several years we have found many of the movies from the network disappointing, not up to the standards of some of their earlier fare. But we watched this movie this evening and found it interesting, with good characterization, the best we’d seen in a long time.
    Bad move, Syfy, bad move.

Holy moly! this was so good and now im devistated they arent continuing a series…said there were 5 episodes… why not show them and let your fans make the decision good or bad. this was a bad call on syfy…whomever is giving you bigwigs a dvice is an idiot and needs to be fired…this isnt the first time you have let me down…now how can we as fans of this show picked up by another network.. i think this would make it big… i plan to write to the big networks to have this show picked up..no change in any characters or the people playing them…ugh i am so mad!!!!

  • I accidentlally found the Pilot of “Rewind” and my and and I enjoyed it immensely. We both are hardcore SciFi junkies and I think it was a mistake to drop the Show before you give it up without a followup show to keep promoting. The show has a good base point to a continuing series. There are numerous story lines that can be done and give the people that have imagination something to talk about. I for one can come with a dozen story lines that would make this show work……..

VERY BAD MOVE SYFY! What would it take to bring this show to a series level? You have the those of us who are hooked after the Pilot……I would rethink you shortsightedness….before it is too late!

I also just happened to catch this and I was really interested. I can’t believe it isn’t going to series, its way better than their new darling Defiance. Honestly between the wrestling and all the reality shows, I am starting to wonder if syfy even wants to do science fiction tv anymore. The end of Warehouse 13 might be the end of watching syfy for me.

A shame. One of the best pilots I’ve seen in ages. And now we’ll never know what happened at the end…

Typical idiotic move by Syfy. I don’t think the folks running Syfy can do more than one serious series at a time. Defiance is a nice show, but it isn’t living up to the hype it had prior to be aired. Anyone playing the video game. Where are all the tie-in’s to the show? Rewind received ZERO advertising on Syfy. The show just aired one night. What idiot decided that?
