Syfy Drops Time-Travel Show Rewind

The network has passed on the new TV series … and already aired the pilot.

Syfy Channel won’t send its time-travel pilot Rewind to series, the network officially confirmed today via Twitter.

It’s no surprise, seeing as the pilot shot in the spring of 2012 and the network has been conspicuously silent on the project since its completion. What is surprising is that Syfy has already burned off the pilot as a 2-hour movie. It aired Monday, August 26, with little fanfare and next to no advertising. (I, for one, was looking forward to seeing the show and had no idea it was going to be on.)

Rewind stars Shane McRae as an ex-Special Forces operative who joins a secret government division that uses experimental time travel technology to attempt to undo major world catastrophes — an idea not far off from Seven Days, which ran for three seasons on UPN (1998-2001).

The pilot burn-off is becoming common practice for Syfy, which has done the same with the pilot for Three Inches and Battlestar Galactica‘s spin-off Blood & Chrome.

In fact, Syfy doesn’t have all that great a track record with the pilot process itself. Most of the cable channel’s successful original scripted series started with a script and a full season order, including the forthcoming Helix, Defiance, and all three Stargate series.

Two other scripted series are currently at the pilot production stage for Syfy: Dominion, based on the angel warrior movie Legion; and High Moon, based on the 1969 John Christopher novel The Lotus Caves.

  • Wish they would make it a series

  • Looked like the “Pilot” had some teeth. Why would they cancel it after the Pilot? Looking for the next big thing that could last at least three years, I think the Exec’s need to be replaced, BAD CALL to scrap it after the pilot. I’m not a huge fan of SyFi movies, but this got my attention. I’m sorry for the actors, actresses and writers who spent there time on this, this could have been a great show. To the Exec’s and decesion makers who pulled this show, VERY, VERY BAD JOB ON YOUR PART. If you don’t know how to promote a series, get a new job. I’ve worked in advertising…NYC and major accounts. “Stargate”, was nowhere close to this potential. Shame on you.

  • syfy what’s the point in making a good pilot that can be easily turned into a great series? I thought the pilot was great so did a lot of other people, look at youtube. I mean you waste all this time, money and effort and for what? you must really like wasting money. if you’re going to do foolish things like that you might as well close shop and let somebody else who is more competent and not scared to go that extra mile. sorry but, that’s what I feel, you had a great concept. that was weak in what you did

  • Sounds like the plot was too real for some folks in gov’t and they got scared so a great show was canceled because the powers that be made it so.

  • The reason they yanked it was because it hits too close to home, or should I say, what’s about to happen come September 2015 !
God bless and be vigilant 😉

Cannot believe that a good show like rewind was not continued this show had tremendous amounts of potential all wasted because whoever was in charge had no forsight.

This would have been a fantastic show. It mixes Sliders, Stargate, WH13 and many others to create what was a really fun and engaging show. The set up was great and it had so many levels of complexity that you could find a hook no matter what you taste in Sc-Fi. It is a real shame they didn’t see the potential in this.

Rewind was amazing show… Please bring it back and run a 4 or 5 season series with it.
If you look at all if the reviews on it, people loved it!
And besides, you can’t just leave everyone hanging with that big cliff hanger at the end… It’s just not right.

It may have been pulled because there is a similar government operation secretly sending people through time. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the show and hope there were more episodes made than just the pilot.

  • I just watched the pilot movie. Two observations: 1) Anyone old enough to remember the series “Time Tunnel”? 2) As others have stated, The Scifi (pronounced sigh fie, of course) Channel was great but the SyFy (pronounced See [crap for a] Fee) has nothing whatsoever to do with science fiction and is merely cruddy grade Z movies produced by people who neither know nor care what even mediocre scifi actually is, much less GOOD scifi.

    Wow!
What a great pilot with such huge potential!
The people responsible for pulling the series should reconsider.
Huge potential for an award winning show!
    Please bring it back!

  • I loved it. Too bad there isn’t another. Too many shows out today that are bland or try too hard. The acting was great and the concepts were right up CERN’s vortex. Pity, darn pity.

I see this as a could be short series, running out of steam quickly, with this pilot. I loved it, and watched the entire thing on youtube ( i was hooked), but the end is where they screw it up. it should go more the way of quantum leap. the door way kinda works one way getting in, but because they were apart of the time stream opening and changing, they constantly move to the new area of the window that opens up. and the people running the place is trying to bring them home, so everytime the time window changes and they are tossed into the new location, something happens, they disturb things, (iggy(ref from quantum leap)), they check with the guy back at the base who tells them what they messed up and what is happeneing now and what most likely needs to happen to fix things before they leap again into another timeline.. when in actualality they usually fix something else usually small but sometimes big for the better.. this could be easily be a quantum leap reboot. exact same pilot, just stuck leaping in time when the window changes… I love it..
