Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith Joins Terminator: Genesis

He’ll play a new character closely connected to John Connor

Actor Matt Smith is jumping on board the reboot of the Terminator movie franchise, Paramount has confirmed.

The former Doctor Who star has been cast in Terminator: Genesis, playing a new character who has a strong connection to John Connor (Jason Clarke, Zero Dark Thirty). Deadline reports that the role will grow in the second and third films of a planned trilogy.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, and Byung Hun Lee also star in the film. Clarke (Game of Thrones Daenerys) will play Sarah Connor.

Terminator: Genesis is directed by Alan Taylor, and will arrive in theaters worldwide on July 1, 2015.

Smith left Doctor Who at the end of last year. Peter Capaldi takes on the iconic role when the show returns for its eighth season, expected to premiere late this summer.
